Q

A mat-supported jack-up is best suited for drilling in locations with bottom conditions which are __________.

🔍 Key Concepts

• Mat-supported jack-up rigs and how their legs/mats contact the seabed • Differences between soft vs. hard bottom conditions for supporting weight • Why a wide mat might be used instead of individual spud cans or legs

💭 Think About

• Think about what happens when a heavy structure rests on a small contact area versus a large, flat mat on the seabed. • In which type of soil or seabed will a broad mat distribute the load most effectively without punching through or tilting? • Consider which bottom condition would most benefit from spreading the rig’s weight over a large area rather than concentrated points.

✅ Before You Answer

• Which option describes a bottom that benefits from load being spread out over a large surface? • Eliminate any options where small, point-load supports (like spud cans) would already work well without a mat. • Ask yourself: in which condition would a mat help prevent sinking, punching in, or instability the most?
